Onimusha Dawn of Dreams Akane: Story & Combat Guide

Onimusha Dawn of Dreams Akane is the story of Akane Yagyu, the current Jubei and granddaughter of the legendary Jubei Yagyu. She belongs to the Yagyu clan and carries Oni blood, a heritage that grants her unusual physical potential and a rare ability known as the Demon Eye.

Akane was born in 1584 and spent her early childhood in Yagyu Village. Her peaceful life ended when her uncle, Munenori Mataemon Yagyu, betrayed the clan. Munenori believed his father had caused his mother’s death by taking her eye, a revelation that fueled his resentment toward the family. He eventually slaughtered members of the Yagyu clan, including Akane’s father, before joining Hideyoshi Toyotomi and the Genma.

Akane survived the massacre and made revenge her central purpose. She trained in the Seigo-Ryu sword-fighting style for eight years, building the speed and technical discipline needed to challenge older and more experienced warriors.

Akane’s path to becoming Jubei begins with the Battle for Jubei’s Succession, a contest held among her generation of Yagyu warriors. The winner must prove they are strong enough to carry the clan’s most respected name.

Several Yagyu fighters form groups to eliminate Akane because they consider her the greatest threat. She survives the mountain battle despite hunger and exhaustion, eventually defeating Sukekuro, the last remaining contender. Her victory establishes that her speed and swordsmanship are more than enough to support the Jubei title.

After the contest, Sekishusai officially gives Akane the name. He also teaches her that the Yagyu sword is a blade of life, not a tool for selfish ambition. This lesson becomes a key moral foundation for her later decisions.

Akane fights with shikomizue, concealed swordsticks that match her agile and deceptive style. Her movement emphasizes speed, sudden direction changes, and attacks from unexpected angles. She can also fit through small openings and cross narrow bridges, making her especially suited to infiltration and difficult terrain.

Her combat techniques include the Bladeless Skim and Sakura Flurry. Sakura Flurry is a rapid six-strike technique that demonstrates how Akane combines accuracy with controlled force. During her encounter with Musashi, she uses the flat end of her blade rather than killing him, showing that restraint can matter as much as technical superiority.

The Demon Eye is Akane’s most important supernatural trait. It reacts to Oni-related threats, including Munenori and Soki, and eventually allows her to awaken and control her Oni power. Her recovery also improves after the ability develops, although exhaustion, hunger, and prolonged pursuit still leave her vulnerable.

Akane enters the events of Dawn of Dreams after following rumors of the Blue Demon to Suruga. She initially mistakes Soki for the figure behind the rumors and attacks him before learning that he also possesses Oni power. Their early confrontation quickly becomes an alliance when Genma meteors descend and hostile creatures overrun the town.

Akane tells Soki about Genma Trees at Satta Pass, where she is also tracking Munenori. The two work together, with Soki drawing attention during the assault while Akane infiltrates the fortress. Her personal mission remains separate from the group’s larger goal, but the campaign gradually changes her priorities.

Over time, Akane joins Soki, Ohatsu, Tenkai, Roberto, and Minokichi in the struggle against Hideyoshi and the Genma. She serves as a fast-moving scout, infiltrator, and rival hunter. Her ability to sense Munenori makes her particularly valuable when the party confronts the rogue Yagyu at key locations.

Akane’s relationship with Soki becomes emotionally important. She develops a crush but ultimately describes her feelings as closer to those for an older brother. Near the end of the campaign, she accepts that Soki and Ohatsu share a bond and asks Ohatsu to take care of him.

This decision marks Akane’s growth. Instead of allowing jealousy or personal attachment to divide the group, she chooses loyalty and acknowledges Soki’s right to follow his own destiny.

Akane confronts Munenori repeatedly throughout the story, but their final battle takes place after the party reaches Nagoya Castle and later during the assault on Kyoto. Before the decisive confrontation, Akane reveals the truth behind Munenori’s Demon Eye: his mother willingly gave her own eye to save him.

Munenori reacts with indifference, confirming that his resentment has overtaken any concern for the family he once belonged to. Akane recognizes that he is no longer capable of returning to the Yagyu path and decides that death is the only lesson he may understand.

At Nagoya Castle, Akane gains complete control over her Demon Eye and defeats Munenori. He survives long enough to continue serving the Genma, consuming Genma Insects and becoming increasingly unstable. During the final assault on Kyoto, Akane defeats him again despite his enhanced condition.

Munenori later attempts to use the Genma Seed as a vessel for the resurrection of Fortinbras. His actions help create the final crisis, but his plan does not save him. The conflict ends with Akane having fulfilled the central promise she made after the destruction of Yagyu Village.

Akane later travels through Japan and hears rumors that Munenori may have survived. She also learns what happened to her allies. Two years later, she visits Soki’s grave and promises to protect the real cherry trees in his place. She then continues her journey, preparing to join the Battle of Sekigahara.

Her legacy is therefore more complicated than a revenge victory. Akane inherits the Jubei name, controls her Oni power, honors her grandfather’s teachings, and carries the memories of those lost in the war.
