Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams ohatsu

In Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, Ohatsu is both a major supporting character and one of the story’s most emotionally complicated figures. She is the daughter of Nagamasa Azai and Oyu, making her a niece of Nobunaga Oda and a sister of Yodo and Oeyo. Her family ties place her close to the political conflict surrounding Hideyoshi Toyotomi, while her personal connection to Hideyasu Yūki gives her storyline a more intimate focus.

Ohatsu serves Hideyoshi as a mediator between the Toyotomi and Tokugawa factions. This position explains why she repeatedly tries to persuade Hideyasu to abandon his resistance. Her loyalty is not simple obedience, however. She is troubled by the changes she sees in Hideyoshi and by the growing distance between the Toyotomi leadership and the people around it.

Ohatsu’s relationship with Hideyasu is the emotional foundation of her arc. She wants him to return to Hideyoshi, but she also understands that something is wrong. The tension between those goals makes their early encounters feel less like simple hero-versus-enemy battles and more like failed attempts at reconciliation.

Ohatsu fights at range and brings a flexible toolkit to every encounter. Her primary style uses firearms, but she also carries explosives and a grapple hook. This combination allows her to pressure enemies from a distance, disrupt groups, and reposition when close combat becomes dangerous.

Her fighting style contrasts with Hideyasu’s more direct swordplay. Hideyasu generally closes distance and commits to melee exchanges, while Ohatsu creates space and controls the battlefield. When the two fight together, their abilities cover different ranges and encourage a balanced approach.

Ohatsu’s alternate costume is Chun-Li, a crossover-style reference that changes her appearance without altering her story role. For story progression and major encounters, her key identity remains that of a firearm-based marksman connected to the Oni Warriors.

Ohatsu first appears with Munenori Yagyū while watching Hideyasu burn Genma Trees transported by one of Hideyoshi’s generals. This scene establishes her connection to Munenori and places her close to the Genma conspiracy before she fully understands its scope.

She later confronts Hideyasu at the fortress in Suruga. Ohatsu attempts to convince him to stop resisting Hideyoshi and return with her. Hideyasu refuses, defeats her, and then asks her to travel with him. Munenori interrupts before she can accept, creating the first clear sign that her movements are not entirely voluntary.

Ohatsu later rescues Hideyasu from a cave where he and Tenkai Nankobo have been trapped. During this conversation, Hideyasu explains that Hideyoshi intends to transform people into Genma. Ohatsu connects this plan to Mitsunari Ishida, whose behavior changed after Hideyoshi approached him about the Genma.

As Ohatsu and Hideyasu climb the castle, Munenori again forces her to return. He threatens to reveal a secret known only to himself and Ohatsu. Even after Munenori is defeated, his cryptic words leave Hideyasu without a clear explanation of Ohatsu’s connection to him.

The most important turning point in Ohatsu’s story occurs while she is traveling with Hideyasu. She begins to feel weak, and the group discovers that Genma Insects have infected her body. This explains why Munenori could control her: he was able to activate the insects and threaten her humanity whenever he wished.

Minokichi advises Hideyasu to kill Ohatsu before she becomes a Genma Tree. Hideyasu refuses, choosing to search for another solution. Arin later reveals that Ohatsu may still be saved if Hideyasu becomes an Onimusha and completes the required trials.

The encounter is significant because it changes the meaning of Ohatsu’s earlier behavior. She was not simply betraying Hideyasu or voluntarily serving Munenori. The infection gave Munenori leverage over her, making her political role part of a larger Genma control scheme.

When Hideyasu returns from the Oni trials, he is too late to prevent Ohatsu from becoming a full Genma. She is preparing to kill Minokichi and Arin when Hideyasu breaks through the barrier between the human world and the Oni World. He fights her again and uses his power to remove the insects from her body.

After she is saved, Ohatsu joins Hideyasu in the final fight against Hideyoshi and the Genma. Her recovery is not treated as a reset; the experience permanently changes how she understands her loyalties and the danger surrounding her family.

Ohatsu’s closest relationship is with Hideyasu. They have known each other since childhood, and her feelings remain strong even while she serves Hideyoshi. Their connection explains why she repeatedly tries to reach him before the conflict becomes irreversible.

Munenori represents the darker side of her relationships. He uses the Genma Insects to control her and withholds a secret that keeps her isolated from Hideyasu. His influence turns Ohatsu’s political mediation into a form of coercion, making her eventual rescue especially important.

Near the end of the story, Ohatsu confronts Ophelia and defeats her. She then helps Hideyasu fight Hideyoshi and destroy the Genma threat. Hideyasu ultimately sacrifices his life to destroy the Genma Trees, leaving Ohatsu alive but permanently affected by the loss.

After the conflict, Ohatsu marries her cousin Takatsugu Kyōgoku and helps Yodo care for Hideyori. Her later life is secure and prosperous, but she never forgets Hideyasu, her first love. This ending gives her arc a restrained and melancholy conclusion rather than a simple romantic resolution.
